West Street Studio -- About Us
Robert and Charlotte Lawrence live and work at West Street Studio right by the sea in Johnshaven which is a small, untouched fishing village in the North East of Scotland.
From West Street Studio, Robert paints canvases in oil. The current series is of the Scottish Fishing Fleet. Robert is self taught and has been working as a professional artist for the last four years.
He is currently exhibiting a previous series of paintings depicting Carnival Figures at The Gallery@Richmond in London. Previous commissions have included portraiture for the family of A.E. Housman, architectural paintings of Churches, and restoration work.
Charlotte has always been interested in textiles and sewing techniques and, having become frustrated with the quality and sameness of mass produced items, now produces colourful appliqued textiles. The material used in each item is pre-washed and pre-shrunk with a suitable batting (wadding) and backing. Many of the designs are three dimensional incorporating notions and embellishments to add interest and attract the eye.
The idea for children's clothes came from the variety of soft woolen tartans available locally and is a relatively new venture. In addition to tartan, a variety of materials is used to produce christening gowns, patchwork skirts, smocked dresses and rompers.
Having recently received a request for a more adult theme, Charlotte is developing a new line of formal textile furnishings - watch this space !!.
